Dior has recently came out with 13 new 5 Couleurs Couture Eye Shadow Palettes. Here I am going to review the Dior 879 Rouge Trafalgar palette. It is retailed at $62 USD with 0.24 oz or 7 g of products. Each of the Dior 5 Couleurs Couture Eye Shadow Palette has a color theme to it. There are two palettes with a reddish theme like the 879 Rouge Trafalgar that I got. The other one being 859 Pink Corolle, which leans more towards candy pink.
In many retailer’s website, this Dior 879 Rouge Trafalgar palette looks very red and pink. However, in person, it looks much more wearable than what you might think! At least it is not as bright red in some of the photos.

Swatches and formula of Dior 879 Rouge Trafalgar
I think the close-up picture above is a pretty good representation of the shades you can see in person.
Here are the swatches (top to bottom: corresponds to the shades from the upper left corner and then clockwise, then the shade in the middle):
Every shades in this palette is very pigmented. An exception is the lightest pearly shade on the upper right. It is more of a sheer topper shade to make your finish eye look very sparkly. It has a very faith pink itself but you won’t be able to see the color once you applied it to your lid.
All the shades at the corners are shimmery or having some sort of sheen to it. While the center red shade is a matte and a little goes a very long way, beware! The brown at the lower right looks like a regular brown but on the swatches, it has a hint of dark cherry color.
The palette does not contain any fragrance at all.
For the formula, I think they are very soft, smooth and pigmented. Even though the topper shade (upper right) is not as pigmented and mostly only sparkles, it is still pretty smooth and not gritty on the lid.
The last Dior 5 Couleurs Couture Eye Shadow Palette I got was the limited edition 5 Couleurs Mightlight Wish in 057 Moonlight from last year, it was a baked jelly kind of formula, and even before that was the regular older formula. Comparing those with this release in 879 Rouge Trafalgar, I think this is much better in terms of the overall quality, pigmentation, ease to pick up by eye brushes and color payoff. For sure they have more variety of textures in one palette for this new batch too.
Ingredients in Dior 879 Rouge Trafalgar
I can say the drastic difference in formula of these new Dior 5 Couleurs Couture Eye Shadow Palette can easily be spotted by their change in key ingredients for each shadows.
I believe in the past, they seldom use talc in their 5 Couleurs, at least not in as the first few key ingredients. However, in all these new Couleurs, they have talc as the first one or two ingredients in EACH of the shades!
Guess talc can give the eyeshadows a particular texture, but I would personally rather trade off the texture with a non-talc formula. Although I am not going to rate eyeshadows for their ingredients unless they use those that are known to be bad for skin, I just wanted to point out they use talc here.
Comparison with Charlotte Tilbury Walk of No Shame luxury eye shadow quad
I have recently reviewed the Charlotte Tilbury luxury eye quad in Walk of No Shame here in Glammining.com. When I first saw this Dior 879 Rouge Trafalgar, I immediately think of how (potentially) similar they are among relatively new eye shadow palettes.
Once their swatches are compared side-by-side, you’ll see how different they indeed are from each other!
Dior 879 Rouge Trafalgar swatches are on the left with the same order as before, and the 4 shades on the right are the CT Walk of No Shame in the order Prime (upper left), Pop (lower left), Smoke (lower right) and Enhance (upper right):
As you can see, the CT one is very orangy in comparison with the Dior 879 Rouge Trafalgar. I’m quite surprised to see how orangy it is. I almost feel like the CT Walk of No Shame quad is perfect for the Halloween in October because it is so pumpkin in color!
I don’t think there is any similarity between these two palettes to conclude.
After swatching one another other of the two palettes, I think the CT Walk of No Shame feels more creamy, opaque and thicker than the texture of the Dior 879 Rouge Trafalgar. However, I think Rouge Trafalgar is easier to be picked up by the brush, and hence more pigmented on my eye lid somehow.
2 eye looks using Dior 879 Rouge Trafalgar
For the eye look on the top, I used all the shades in the palette, focusing on lighter colors to make the look, the deeper brown and the matte red were only slightly added to the very outer corner for depth. The rest of the lid was covered with the topper shade.
For the second look at the bottom, I used more of the deep brown (purple brown) color on the cease and outer corner. I did do a cut-cease with a concealer on the majority of my mobile eye lid. Then put the topper shade on top, with a natural hair brush and then finger. It is interesting that the brush picked up the sparkle much better than a finger in this case.
I was pleasantly surprised by how sparkly was the second eye look came out! I think it is perfect for a night time eye look.
Final Thoughts
Overall, I really like the quality and outcome of this Dior 879 Rouge Trafalgar palette. I would definitely recommend it if you don’t mind having talc as the major ingredients. It is very easy to use, blending itself out effortlessly and having a cohesive color story. Looking at the other 12 of the new 5 Couleurs Couture palettes, some of them look similar to me and the swatches on the models does seem like the shades within one palette are quite close to each other. I may want to pick up one more: the 649 Nude Dress. It seems to be a very versatile everyday palette.
I will rate this new Dior 5 Couleurs Couture in 879 Rouge Trafalgar as:
- Texture: 8.5/10
- Color payoff: 9.5/10
- Longevity on eye lid: 10/10
- Quality consistency among shades: 8/10
- Color scheme uniqueness: 9.5/10
- Affordability: 6.5/10
