Considering that the Sephora VIB sale this winter is around the corner, and that I have found a couple face primers for dry skin that really work, I wanted to write about it and share with anyone who are interested!
I also have other recommendations on face masks for dry skin, face oils and serum for skin care.

Important to find face primers suitable for your own skin type
There are enormous amount of face primers in the market and I found it hard to know which ones are right for your skin type and needs. Based on individual difference, the ones that work for me may not necessarily work for you as well, but it may still be helpful if you’re also looking for something similar.
My skin type is mostly dry, sometimes there can be shine, but I don’t consider myself as combination. Things I look for in a face primer are:
- not drying out my skin and provides at least a little bit of hydration
- keeps the makeup/foundation from settling into lines (especially the smile lines for me)
- helps balance my oil secretion so my face makeup doesn’t disintegrate too badly at the end of the day
I’m going to tell you guys what face primers for dry skin are good and worth investing in!
Face primers for dry skin (2nd runner up): Good Molecules Silicone-free Priming Moisturizer
This priming moisturizer retails for $14 USD for 1.7 fl. oz. or 50 ml, available from Beautylish. You can also get a travel size of 0.5 fl. oz. or 15 ml for $6 USD.
The ingredient highlights for this primer is described as:
- Plant-based, naturally derived alternative to silicone: smooths skin texture, plump up fine lines
- Macadamia seed oil: nourishes, promotes skin cell regeneration
- Shea butter: soothes and heal skin with antioxidant vitamin E
- Essential fatty acids from olive oil: protects, strengthens the skin’s barrier function while delivering moisture deep within the skin
It is also vegan, fragrance-free, alcohol-free, PEG-free and mineral oil-free.
My personal opinion on this Good Molecules face primers for dry skin is that, it feels very comfortable to wear and hydrating. It maybe a little bit thick, but not bothering or affecting makeup application. I guess also because of the texture of this product (not too lightweighed), I feel that there’s a layer of barrier to protect my skin from the environment or even my makeup, in a good sense.
Face primers for dry skin (1st runner up): Smashbox Photo Finish Vitamin Glow Primer
My face primer for dry skin recommendation in the second place is the Smashbox Photo Finish Vitamin Glow Primer. It retails for $39 USD for 1 fl. oz or 30 ml of product.
I got mine during the 50% off sales from Sephora, which was price-matched with the Ulta 21 days of beauty event. For 50% off, it is a really good primer for the cost!
The benefits for this primer is described as:
• Lightweight, water-gel formula awakens & refreshes skin
• Vitamins B, C & E: revitalize skin for a healthy glow
• Instantly hydrates, softens & nourishes skin so makeup goes on smoothly & effortlessly
• Packed with good-for-your-skin antioxidants & birch water
It is also vegan, gluten-free. I don’t detect any fragrance in this primer, although there is a faint smell of orange to it due to the Vitamin C.
Because of the water-gel texture of this Smashbox Photo Finish Vitamin Glow Primer, it feels extra hydrating, very refreshing and cooling when applied due to the gel and the fresh orange smell. It is a bonus when you can put something uplifting onto the skin in the early morning!
Also thanks to the water-gel formula, it is absorbed into the skin quickly and providing moisture, so as to prevent the makeup from breaking apart with time. This allows my makeup to go on smoothly without feeling dry.
Face primers for dry skin (champion): Tatcha The Liquid Silk Canvas: Featherweight Protective Primer
Tatcha The Liquid Silk Canvas is my current favorite face primer for dry skin! It retails for $52 USD for 1 oz. or 30 ml of product, I got mine from Sephora. You can also get a travel size of 0.35 oz. or 10 ml for $22 USD.
It is said to be a primer for both the face and eyes.
The benefits of this face primer are:
- Silk extracts: nourishing on skin, blurs the look of pores, fines lines and imperfections for the perfect canvas before makeup
- Silk powder: makes makeup glide on evenly and last longer, minimizes excess shine with a soft focus finish
- Protective barrier derived from botanicals: as a barrier between makeup and skin, help minimizing clogged pores that can lead to breakouts
- Anti-pollution natural active ingredients: fight immediate attack from environmental stressors, support skin barrier function, visibly reducing the appearance of wrinkles and dullness
- Pink and gold pearl: even skin tone
- Hadasei-3™: a trinity of Japanese superfoods, green tea, rice and algae, visibly restores youthful radiance
It seems there are lots of benefits from the ingredients claimed in this Tatcha The Liquid Silk Canvas face primer. I cannot say if I noticed all these benefits during the couple months of using this primer. I don’t use on a daily basis due to the price of this item, but only on occasions that I really want my makeup to look good the whole day!
Upon the first time using this Tatcha primer, I immediately noticed my makeup was holding up very well at the end of the day. The foundation or powder usually settle in my lines and separate on my cheek and under my eye at the end of the day, but I see about 50-80% less of those whenever I use this primer!
The consistency of it is somewhat in between the Good Molecule and the Smashbox face primers I mentioned above. It feels creamy and absorbed well onto the skin.
Overall, I’m surprised to find a face primer that really works for my dry skin! I always think face primer is just a gimmick for makeup brands to make people buy another moisturizer on top of what we have been using in our skin care routine. However, I still think most of the primers in the market don’t do much for me other than acting as a moisturizer.
A final word
These 3 face primers for dry skin are what I have been using for most part in this year. These work great for my skin type and needs. However, some of these may not work for everyone even with dry skin types as our skins are all different in some way. I hope this review/recommendation for face primer at least is useful for some of you guys. I am happy to know what face primers you are using and work well for you!
