Rare Beauty Magnetic Spirit eyeshadow palette

Rare Beauty by Selena Gomez is a new brand recently available in Sephora. According to their website, Rare Beauty is a brand aimed to promote positive self-image and being comfortable in expressing who you are. They are also raising funds to promote metal well-being. I didn’t know the concept behind the brand before writing this review. During this current difficult time of the pandemic, it is nice for makeup brands to encourage positive thinking and to give back to the community to help people, kudos for that.

Well, even though now I know Rare Beauty by Selena Gomez is aiming to do some good to the society and I adore that, my view on their products is still unbiased as a consumer.

This Rare Beauty Magnetic Spirit eyeshadow palette is my first purchase from this brand. I was curious when this palette first came out in Sephora. The color story is very vibrant and colorful, matching the name ‘Magnetic Spirit’ pretty well indeed.

About the Rare Beauty Magnetic Spirit eyeshadow palette

This Rare Beauty Magnetic Spirit eyeshadow palette retails for $25 USD, available in Sephora’s and Rare Beauty’s websites. It is claimed that this palette is ‘inspired by the light and energy that surrounds us’, ‘let you create endless looks that reflect your true aura. Featuring rich jewel tones in metallic and duo-chrome finishes, these creamy, pigment-packed shades are silky-smooth and blend effortlessly’.

All the shades in this Rare Beauty Magnetic Spirit eyeshadow palette are shimmery, there is no matte. Not all the formulae of the shades are the same. Textures of the 2 shades at either end of the palette are very different from the rest of the palette.

One thing that that really stands out to me about this palette is its packaging! I don’t know why but it just caught my attention more than the eyeshadows themselves! This makes me want to talk about it.

First of all, I really liked how compact is the palette. The pan size looks pretty big, bigger than those from the Urban Decay naked series of palettes. However, it contains the same amount of product per pan as in the Urban Decay’s (1.3g per shade). The palette is made of plastic and has a decent weight to it. The packaging doesn’t feel cheap. I know it’s very detailed, but I also liked the round corners at the bottom of the palette. It makes the palette very cute.

Secondly, it is the color and geometric patterns on the palette, and also the sort of raised clear plastic molding on the front of the palette with the brand name. The coloring, the pattern and the overall look to it feels 80s.

Another thing I like about this Rare Beauty Magnetic Spirit eyeshadow palette is the ingredients used to make the shadows- it is almost talc-free (except the shade Ignite has talc towards the end of the ingredients)! Nowadays it is hard to find eyeshadow palette release that doesn’t contain talc.

For the texture of the eyeshadows, I would say I am not the biggest fan of it. Yes, it swatches very nicely and smooth, but they are not very creamy, but on the harder side. Shimmer shades in the Huda Beauty Khaki Haze Obsession palettes (reviewed here), Too faced Salted Caramel palette (reviewed here) and Natasha Denona Glam palette (reviewed here) are more creamy and soft than the ones in this Magnetic Spirit palette.

I also think the color payoff of the shades are not so great as the swatches. Some shades are not showing much on the lid if I don’t use my finger.

The shade Ablaze on the left-most is a pink duo-chrome with a very strong purple shift (my camera mainly picked up the purple in the head-on photo above), while the shade on the right-most (Passion) is a dark olive shade instead of a dark grey in the photo. The shade Clarity (the lightest shade among all) is a cool champagne color instead of a light lavender in the photo. Apologize for the rather big discrepancy for the color shading in the photo compared with the true color.

The photo below seems to represent the true color better:

Ablaze is pretty hard to the touch, after swirling my finger into the pan to pick up products, the pan is hardened and it may tend to develop a hard pan very soon. Passion has quite a lot of fallout and the texture is a bit rough. Other shades are also on the drier side in general.

As I mentioned earlier, the shades are less pigmented on the lid than from the swatches.

3 eye looks using the Rare Beauty Magnetic Spirit eyeshadow palette

For the first 2 eye looks, I used only the shades in this Magnetic Spirit palette, but the last look I used a matte shade from the Dior Tutu eyeshadow palette (reviewed here).

In eye look #1, I used Passion to deepen my outer corner, however, there are quite a lot of fallout (you can see it on my cheek bone in the picture). So, if you’re going to use a lot of this shade to deepen the outer corner etc, be prepared for the fallout and maybe do the eyes first.

Besides, the duo-chrome shade Ablaze is quite sheer on the lid and not easy to pick up even with the finger.

In look #2, the pink (Ignite) and the coral (Grounded) blended pretty well together on the lid. If you’re more heavy-handed, you may be able to see more of a difference of the 2 shades if you’d want them to be more distinguishable.

In look #3, I pulled in a matte shade from the Dior Tutu palette as a transition on my crease.

Final Thoughts

Overall, I like this Rare Beauty Magnetic Spirit eyeshadow palette by Selena Gomez. However, I may not buy it again if I could choose. It’s true that the palette is very cute and the shades are pretty workable, but the quality is not as good as many recent eyeshadow release in the market. To me, the color story is fun but not very practical for day to day use. I won’t be able to use many of the shades very often. I would like to see them have a more every day palette coming out soon with matte and creamier texture. But please keep it talc-free!

Besides, I will need to pull in another palette for the matte shade, this is not a stand-alone palette for me.

If you’re into fun shades or want to have a pairing palette with only shimmer shades, this is a decent option. I think the price is rather fair.

I will rate this Rare Beauty Magnetic Spirit eyeshadow palette by Selena Gomez as:

  • Texture: 6.5/10
  • Color payoff: 7/10
  • Longevity on eye lid: 7.5/10
  • Quality consistency among shades: 6/10
  • Color scheme uniqueness: 7/10
  • Affordability: 7/10
