Tom Ford First Frost is the 4th eye color quad released from the Tom Ford Soleil Neige collection since last year. They already released 3 quads, 01 Soleil Neige, 02 Soleil et Lune and 03 Soleil d’Hiver in 2019. This 04 Tom Ford First Frost quad is the only one released so far this year.
In contrast to all quads with the regular powder formula released by Tom Ford, First Frost has the wet/dry formula that is different to the touch and texture. So far this is the only wet/dry formula quad released by Tom Ford this year. I wish they make more quads with this formula because it is my favorite eyeshadow formula among all!
Initially I wasn’t decided to grab this Tom Ford First Frost quad as it looks very similar to Soleil d’Hiver, which I thought it was just a re-promotion of Soleil d’Hiver! However, reading some reviews about it make me so tempted to get it! (You’ll know why after this review!)

About the Tom Ford First Frost Soleil eye color quad
Tom Ford First Frost Soleil eye color quad retails for $88 USD, which is the same for all Tom Ford’s eyeshadow quads. It is available on and off in Sephora and Beautylish (where I got mine! Very nicely and securely packed as always), but recently more retailers such as Nordstrom (15% off price-matched now!), Neiman Marcus and Macy’s (currently having 15% off too!) also carry this quad.
From Tom Ford, this First Frost quad is described as ‘the Soleil Neige Eye Color Quad‘s pink-toned neutrals and burnished metallic shades achieve multiple looks from a bold, smoky eye to a subtle, glowing look. These shades are formulated with advanced color processes, so the luxurious shimmer finish delivers incredible color and adhesion’.
Ingredients and formulation of the Tom Ford First Frost Soleil eye color quad
As all other wet/dry formula quads from Tom Ford, First Frost does not contain talc and is fragrance-free.
After the Haze Obsessions mini palette (reviewed here) from Huda Beauty, it once again proved that eyeshadows without talc can be as beautiful, smooth and soft as shadows that contain talc (or even better)!
If you own any of the Tom Ford eye quads that can be used wet or dry (with the logo ‘TF’ imprinted on the shadow), you’ll know how amazing the formula is without me explaining too much!
For this particular eye quad from Tom Ford, the performance of the shades is very similar to their other regular quads with the same formula. Among all the Tom Ford eye color quads I own (4 of them: 01 Soleil Neige, 02 Soleil et Lune, Honeymoon and Suspicion; I only purchase the wet/dry formula quads), I’ve never had one single dud shade from any of them. Although 01 Soleil Neige does feel a bit drier than the others overall, it still performs nicely on the lid.
The lightest shade in this Tom Ford First Frost quad is a little chunky, similar to the shade in the same position in the 01 Soleil Neige quad. Even though, it is very sparkly and pretty on the lid. The chunkiness makes it more reflective than metallic.
Swatches of the Tom Ford First Frost Soleil eye color quad
As I talked about in the last session, the soft white sparkle shade on the upper left is not as smooth as the other shades. However, this is more sparkly in exchange.
The soft pink next to it is super stunning! It has a rose gold shift under the light! It is the first pink shade I own from Tom Ford. I know in the Virgin Orchid quad, there is also something similar, although I think that one leans more towards lavender and does not have a rose gold shift.
I guess I’m not the only one, but many people also think the two brown shades at the bottom of the First Frost quad are very similar, at least inside the pans! To me, it is basically just one brown is lighter and the other is deeper, they honestly don’t look too much difference on the lid (when used dry).
Comparison swatches of Tom Ford First Frost to other Tom Ford wet/dry formula eye color quads
Can’t tell exactly until you compare them side-by-side! I thought the white sparkle shade on the upper left of First Frost is the same as the one in 01 Soleil Neige, but their undertones are actually different as you can see from the swatches (#1 and #3). Another surprise is the shade in Honeymoon (#5), didn’t know it leans peachy!
For the soft pink shade in First Frost, I don’t have anything similar in my Tom Ford eye color quad collection. The pink shade in Virgin Orchid would be the closest for my guess. For the champagne shade in Soleil et Lune, I was expecting it to looks more diverse than the pink shade in First Frost (comparing shade #1 and #2 above).
I would say there are lots of comparable brown shades in Tom Ford’s eye color quads. This time I was right that the deeper brown in First Frost is quite similar to the brown in Suspicion. It’s understandable most of them have some sort of browns in the quad as it is a very universal and fool-proof shade in making a complete eye look!

2 eye looks using the Tom Ford First Frost Soleil eye color quad
This eye look, using all the shades in the Tom Ford First Frost eye quad, is certainly a little underwhelming even for natural makeup wearer like me! It was somewhat muddy on the lid. No doubt it is still a pretty eye look for everyday wear in my opinion, but I was expecting more from this $88 USD Tom Ford new eye quad. In this look, I wish the pink can stand out more, like either more sparkly or having more rose gold shift. The shades were all used dry.
Besides, I think I could have build up the shades a bit more to make them more distinguishable, but there are already some amount of fallout on my cheek for the brown shades.
In eye look #2, I used the shades only with my fingers dry. I always feel these wet/dry formula quads are best to be applied with the finger. The outcome of this look is very soft and smooth. There was no fallout. The pink also stands out more this way, I love this look!
Finally a look created with the shadows applied wet! This is actually the first time I have ever used these wet/dry formula wet!
I’m always wary that dipping my wet brush or picking up more product by digging my brush in the pan for wet application will damage the eyeshadows. But I still gotta try to use them wet to see where they can get! I did it and it was a pleasant surprise!
It reminds me of painting a picture with water color! Especially the brown/mauve shade I used, it is very much behaved like water color when wet. The resulting look is impressive! The pink stood out so much more being wet. I love this look, it feels metallic and pretty!
Final Thoughts
Overall, I highly recommend you to get this Tom Ford First Frost Soleil eye color quad if the price doesn’t hesitate you too much and you don’t have something very similar in your collection.
Although it is not as pigmented and impactful as other eyeshadow palettes/brands like Pat McGrath and Too faced, I love how it performs and sometimes we need to pamper ourselves with something nice! I was considering to purchase the Tom Ford 03 Soleil d’Hiver quad last year, but it was sold out rapidly before I made up my mind. So I’m glad I got my hands on this Tom Ford First Frost quad this year. However, if you already own Soleil d’Hiver from last year, you may want to skip this though, as its color scheme looks quite similar to First Frost.
The reason for me to recommend this First Frost quad is due to the nice quality, performance and the luxury elevated experience you could get from using this quad. I like Tom Ford’s eyeshadow and am willing to spend the money on their quads once in a while. If you’re not particularly a Tom Ford collector and you could spend the money on somewhere more important, it’s not the end of the world to pass this.
I’m quite sure if you own any eyeshadow palette, you’ll at least have half of the shades in this Tom Ford First Frost eye quad. The browns in this palette have a smooth and special texture, but other than that, the shades themselves are nothing revolutionary.
I’ll rate this Tom Ford First Frost Soleil eye color quad as:
- Texture: 9/10
- Color payoff: 8/10
- Longevity on eyelid: 9/10
- Quality consistency among shades: 9.5/10
- Color scheme uniqueness: 4.5/10
- Affordability: 5/10
