Nars Extreme Effects eyeshadow palette is the most recent eyeshadow palette Nars released in this Fall! This is a new and improved formulation, a step-up from the older Nars eyeshadow formula. This is said to be a limited edition palette from Nars.
Interestingly, I was not attracted to the color story of this new Nars eyeshadow palette at all at the beginning. The shades put together in this palette didn’t look coherent to me. I’m still not sure why, but probably after watching Tarababyz‘s YouTube video a while back, I became very interested in the formula of this palette and it gradually grew on me!

About the Nars Extreme Effects eyeshadow palette
This Nars Extreme Effects eyeshadow palette retails for $59 USD. It is currently available in quite many places: Nars (affiliate link), Ulta, Sephora, Macy’s (I just found it to be available in Sephora and Macy’s yesterday! And Macy’s is still having the 15% off sale until 10/6/20!)
On their website, this Nars Extreme Effects eyeshadow palette is claimed to be ‘Extreme payoff. Extremely satisfying. Take it all the way with an explicit eye palette featuring our most innovative eyeshadow finishes yet. Introducing 12 sultry shades in supermatte, shimmer, and latex-like finishes, all designed with a superfine, creamy feel. Intensifying. Gratifying. Mesmerizing’. There are couple different textures in this palette as you can see in this close up:
I recently found out with my camera and the natural lighting in my room, shooting the palette from an angle (as I did in my last post) does provide a better perspective of the true color shading you see in person.
Ingredients and formula of Nars Extreme Effects eyeshadow palette
This is another palette that uses talc as the first or second ingredient in all the shades, same situation as the Dior quints, Too faced Salted Caramel palette, Natasha Denona Glam palette and Charlotte Tilbury quad that I reviewed recently.
I’m not sure if you guys usually look at the ingredients of makeup items that you buy or considering, I always do. I notice one of the ingredients is glass beads! Luckily it was only in one of the shades in this palette. It is the black at the lower corner.
Touching the shadows with my fingers, I can feel they are very soft and lightweight, without feeling powdery. They feel like velvet! The shimmers are terrific too: soft, creamy, pigmented and beautiful!
But I would say there is one shadow that doesn’t perform as well, the black shade which contains glass beads. As you can see from the swatches below, the black is somewhat patchy and grainy for the touch. It isn’t as pigmented as well.
Swatches of Nars Extreme Effects eyeshadow palette
The mattes are outstanding! They are so opaque and creamy! There are several purplish shades in this palette, but they all have different textures. From the video below, you can see how sparkly and pretty is the second last shade on the swatch! It reminds me of a starry sky at night!
3 eye looks using the Nars Extreme Effects eyeshadow palette
To me, this Nars eyeshadow palette is about purple more than anything else. So this is the first look that came to my mind, focusing on purple. If you’ve read my other eyeshadow palette reviews, you may already know that I mostly prefer eyeshadow looks with a wash of color for everyday wear. So this is pretty bold to me! Although I think it is very pretty. The shades in this palette are just coordinating each other seamlessly to allow you to create certain looks. This is a well thought-out palette.
In creating this look, I used the shade ‘Uncensored black’ (the black at the end) to deepen the outer corner. Even though I like how the look has turned out, this black didn’t want to blend out. I could imagine if you want to use it in a bigger area, the patchiness will show.
Like the starry purple (the shade ‘Staredown’), ‘Uncensored black’ also has some sparkle in it, but when it is blended with a brush a couple times, most of the sparkles would be gone.
This second eye look focuses on the red or pinkish tones. To my surprise, the orange red (‘All the way’ at the left lower corner) wasn’t as loud as I thought. This eye look as a result is quite wearable for me (probably not with the neon pink eyeliner in real life!). It reminds me of the look that I made with the Dior eyeshadow palette 879 Rouge Trafalgar, as well as the one using the Huda Beauty Khaki Haze Obsessions palette. They are kind of similar in some sense.
This final look represents the type of eye look that I would wear frequently! I’m glad I can create looks from a regular work day to a wild night out with this Nars Extreme Effects eyeshadow palette. This is a very versatile palette with high quality!
Final Thoughts
Overall, this Nars Extreme Effects eyeshadow palette is a win for me. I would recommend it. Although it is pricey (it’s ‘normal’ price for Nars though), I’m inspired to do different looks with this palette. The packaging and the quality inside are very nice. My only complain would be the black shade ‘Uncensored black’ (other than they use talc in making the shadows). It is not grainy on the eye, but it does not perform very well on the lid either. I would rather they just put a matte black with the same formulation as the other mattes in this palette.
I’ll rate this Nars Extreme Effects eyeshadow palette as:
- Texture: 9/10
- Color payoff: 9/10
- Longevity on eye lid: 8/10
- Quality consistency among shades: 8.5/10
- Color scheme uniqueness: 10/10
- Affordability: 7/10
